I recently decided to upgrade my home network connection. There was nothing wrong with the current setup. It had just occurred to me that security had evolved since I bought the existing router. It had been in my home for over a decade. The performance was nothing to write home about. It was adequate. After doing some research, I decided to purchase the Netgear Nighthawk AC1750 (R6700).
This router is for those looking to get a connection in large homes. I took this as an indication that it would provide a comprehensive coverage range.
Who Should Use This Product?
So, what are some of the features that convinced me to buy this router? I like that it had the following:
- Dual-band split between a 450 & 1300 Mbps speed network.
- It comes with a powerful dual-core 1GHz processor.
- It prioritized bandwidth for the more demanding tasks.
- Compatible with Google Assistant.
- It has Circle® Smart Parental Controls features.
- Introduces NETGEAR Armor™ for cutting edge cybersecurity
This router is suitable for those that are looking for a faster router with equally fast internet connectivity. It is marketers to gamers. Having tested it with some bandwidth-intensive games, I would agree that it is a good router for gaming. Those setting up their offices at home would get some joy out of this router as well.
Running Zoom calls, as well as VoIP services, has been a breeze. It is an appreciated feature in the current climate where people are working from home.
It would also be worth purchasing for novices who are vulnerable to cyberattacks. That can be elderly users who do not have much tech experience. Setting up does not require technical skills or know-how.
What You Should Know
The Netgear R6700 has features that are made for those that require faster connections. It exhibited exceptional performance when gaming. The character lagging that was an occasional occurrence with my previous router hasn’t shown up. This is because of the improved processor speed. It also benefits from the advanced upstream QoS that has optimized gameplay on consoles. I tested this on my Xbox One.
There are features on this Netgear AC1750 router that are designed for better streaming experience. The Beamforming+ and built-in iTunes® server add to the downstream QoS that we have already discussed.
This router features some high-powered amplifiers & antennas that are designed to extend WiFi coverage across the home. According to the manufacturer, it is built to give you access from the backyard and areas surrounding your home. Part of this is the Beamforming+ technology being used on both the 2.4 and 5GHz devices. The signal locking onto individual devices for a better mobile experience was a new concept to me.
The main driver for purchasing this product was the emphasis placed on cybersecurity. I know some people that have fallen for cybercriminal plots. Knowing that my home network would be my first line of defence is essential to me. It gives me that extra peace of mind. This is where Netgear Armor comes into play. It is powered by Bitdefender, which is a brand that I have been using for years in the form of antivirus protection and firewalls.
Netgear Armor helps safeguard network users from viruses, Trojans, spyware, ransomware, and other cyberthreats. That is perhaps my favorite thing about this router. I was also happy to know that I can keep track of attacks that have been blocked or opt to be notified when this happens.
My First Impressions
My first impressions came even before getting the product. That is what made my expectations much higher than I had imagined before starting. The three antennas caught my attention immediately. I am accustomed to routers that have two or no antennas at all.
Using it for the first time was just as exciting. Getting devices onto the network is a straightforward process. I used the password located at the base of the router. There is also the added option of being able to connect through the WPS button. I haven’t had to use this one as yet.
There was a distinct difference noted on how long it took from boot up to connection on this router in comparison to the one that I used before. It is likely something that you will only notice after the initial set up.
The Use Phase
The box comes with the router, a quick start guide, a network cable and an AC adapter. Using the quickstart guide makes it very easy to get everything set up and start using it. All you have to do is plug in the router to the modem and the power cable to the rear end of the router.
Soon after connecting the router to my device, the Netgear genie app appeared on my screen. It guided me through the rest of the setup. There wasn’t much to it anyway. Most users will be able to figure this out without any help.
The Netgear R6700 Nighthawk AC1750 1750 Mbps Smart WiFi Wireless Router’s performance exceeded my expectation from the get-go. I was able to connect various wireless devices at the same time and see no drop in speed.
What I was even more pleased with is how quick it boots up. My previous router would require several minutes to get started, then a little longer before I would have access to the internet.
Using it over a month gave me the chance to test it out even further. We held a gaming night for charity. This required good internet speeds on both PC and gaming consoles. There were no complaints as far as speed is concerned. I had to reset this router once when my ISP requested that I do so.
If I gave one tip for getting started, it would be to test out the options on the application. These are especially important for those looking to enhance their network’s cybersecurity. The default settings will do a good job, but you can also reduce or just improve how restrictive they are.
As previously mentioned, cybersecurity was at the core of my decision to purchase the
Netgear AC1750. It is the metric that I used to measure its performance over time. I was impressed with the number of options at my disposal when it comes to limiting access to the network.
Bitdefender’s Netgear Armor does an excellent job of limiting threats on my network. I have yet to come across one that fell through the cracks. Here is a summary of what I liked and didn’t like about this router:
- The signal strength is strong and consistent.
- It starts up at lightning speed.
- The setting up process is beginner-friendly.
- It supports 3.0 USB.
- Firmware upgrades have been seamless.
- It runs on dual-bands.
- It enlarged my wireless coverage range.
- It comes with wall mounts on the back of the router.
- The firmware lagged after an update.
- Not impressed with Circle parental control. It’s buggy.
Speed was not a top priority for me. However, after seeing how much of a difference it makes, I think it should always be a priority. My WiFi is faster than it was before. I can download various files simultaneously, even when there is someone gaming on the network.
The range was not a concern either. There were some blind spots in the home, but we have learned to live with them. You knew where to be if you wanted a fast connection. Thanks to the antennas on the Netgear R6700, my blindspots are a thing of the past. I also have some good service when I am outside the home.
There are four Ethernet ports to use if you wanted a wired connection to some of your devices. I would recommend doing this for gaming consoles and PCs where possible.
After extensively testing out the Netgear R6700, I would certainly recommend it to anyone that requires a speedy router. If you want one that will get you online in minimum time, and comfortably bear the burden of delivering a high-speed wireless connection to various devices, this is a good option.
I have yet to come across anything as good at this price point. If I had to give it a rating, it would be about 4.6/5. Better firmware would improve my rating.
